On the Journal site it said What is happening is the park district is floating ideas on how to cut into the $190,000 subsidy the center is costing the park district. Ochromowicz said the cost of operating the building has been rising $20,000 to $30,000 a year and has gotten out of hand, especially considering the money is subsidizing a non-profit organization with taxpayer funds.
My sign is going to say NO MORE FREE RIDES FOR SENIORS!
I think you're exaggerating...the Senior Ctr. isn't a "free ride," like public transportation...it's just another one of those recreational non-profits, very heavily subsidized with taxpayer money...
...and I notice there's no 990 posted on Senior Services Inc.'s website...because they don't have their own website...the Park District website serves as their website...so, uh, should the Senior Services Inc. 990 be posted on the Park District website?
...and did I miss the contract(s) with the Park District for specific services provided by Senior Services Inc.? I mean...for $190,000 in public subsidies to this one, single non-profit club, you would think *somebody* would have demanded there be specific contracts for each of the services...
I think I'm outraged at this over-sight. Yes. I'm terribly, terribly outraged...
Under prior Park Dist. management the order was very clear: Don't touch the seniors, "their" building or their funding. Under current Park Dist. management the order is: No sacred cows. The residents' facility is for residents' use with the codicil that, if subsidies are necessary to perform a public good, there must be a pretty dang close relationship between costs and benefits. Staff and board are all unanimously agreed that programs, classes, activites, tours, trips, etc. for seniors will not be cut and the Senior Services club will be allowed to use the facility. It just won't be Country Club South with a huge overhead carried by the 92% of seniors and 100% of non-seniors who currently are not members. Seems fair to all concerned.
I agree the center serves a purpose but it is ridiculous that this has been treated like a sacred cow for years and nobody even tried to pull back the huge overhead. What has been going on is outrageous. We can't continue to support these huge subsidies.

The Park district subsidy for this community group is to the tune of $190K each year.
The City subsidy for this community group is to the tune of $35K each year.
The $35K is what got all the press!! That's almost funny!!
