Thursday PRU Briefs!

1. -- Out with the old!

For those who may have missed the announcement by City Manager Hock, the Director of Community Preservation and Development, Ms. Carrie Davis, enjoyed her last day of gainful employment with the City of Park Ridge last Friday.

It is our understanding the assistant to the City Manager, Ms. Cathy Doczekalski -- bet you can't say that fast, five times! -- will be overseeing the department, at least for the time being.

Good luck to Ms. Davis in her future endeavors.

May the good Lord have mercy on Ms. Doczekalski.

2. -- In with the new!

The new City website is up and running and if you are an obsessive mouse clicker, then has the City got a website for you!

Our PRU.TECH adds -- and not a lick of drupal in the source code to be found. Then again, why bother with free open source code when you've got a local company eager to copy and license their own CMS? It's not like the City of Park Ridge could afford either one or another of the web designers at Blue State Digital.

We hope the geeks in the crowd -- we mean that in the nicest way -- have a good time figuring that out.

3. -- Rudyard Kipling and FOIA -- Part deux!

As promised, the Butterly on Education blog has posted another installment of FOIA Fun! The latest piece offers "A few points to keep in mind on your way to becoming a FOIA maven." As well as providing step-by-step strategy instructions --

Butterly's five steps for FOIA requests.

1. Pick your target.
2. Determine who to send the FOIA to.
3. Perfect your question.
4. Send via e-mail.
5. Await your answer.

4. -- Happy Mother's Day!

Or if you prefer --

And there's always --

Enjoy the weekend!

I took a look at the new website. It seems fine to me although I hope they did not pay a great deal for it as I am not sure exactly what was wrong with the old one. I noticed some links to some organizations that it would appear will have a bit less money in the coming months. Holy irony Batman!!! I wonder if those will remain or be expunged from the site.

Can anyone tell me why the Park District canceled their meeting that was scheduled for tonight?

Speaking of the Park District. The HA has a story today about the fireworks being early this year. While I applaud their attempt to reduce costs, it does bring up a question. I remember a document that listed the costs of all these events. But are the fireworks included in those items that the Mayor does not want to fund?? I mean I know about Coc and TOPR but what about the fireworks?? Perhaps I have missed it but I do not remember hearing him say anything about that.

May 6, 2010 3:39 PM,

I don't remember hearing the Mayor or the Aldermen talk about cutting fireworks or the parades or the TOPR costs.

They have only talked about cutting employees and charities.

The fireworks aren't on the $186,000 list because the city and the Park District "run" the fireworks on an intergovernmental basis, so no city or Park District money is being donated to private organizations for that event. Or at least that's how it has been presented for the last X number of years.

The fireworks show still costs the city and the park district money.

If the city is going to look to cut costs then why not cut the fireworks costs too?

To paraphrase...."Meals on wheels???? We are letting police and firemen go!! We cannot afford to spend this money"........20k for fireworks??? No problem!!!"

I hate windchimes! Hey neighbors..take 'em down...let me sleep, let me have my windows open and read in quiet (except for the planes)...let me enjoy my yard without extra noise.

Q: Excessive Noise. If a neighbor makes too much noise, what can be done?
A:
Article 14 of the Municipal Code prohibits the use of any device, apparatus or instrument that emits any loud, excessive or unusual noise in any building or on any premises in the City, if the noise is an annoyance or inconvenience to persons on the street, public places or neighboring premises.

If the noise disturbs the peace of the neighborhood, it is considered a nuisance and the Police Department 847-318-5252 should be notified to restore peace.

does this qualify?

Was Davis asked to leave or did she resign in a huff like Kim Uhlig did?

Anon@8:35-- pole position --

Have you approached your neighbor and asked, nicely if there is some way the windchimes could be muffled?

Anon@8:35 --

We don't feel it matters, either way.

Solving a problem by having a polite, adult discussion??? What?!?!!? Geeeeez I wonder if that would work in PR politics. Naaaah.

Before any of them raise our taxes by one more red cent and dismiss public safety personnel they should have to cut every piece of fluff from the budget. If that means we don't have fireworks or parades or the Taste then so be it.

I think we should dismiss one or two or our overpaid “public safety” employees and keep the fireworks. We only have to hear that noise one day a year, not all year long.

Just pay the ticket.

I think you can pay online now.
