Sunshine Superman! -- Updated!

By: daniellefave

Many of you may remember that back in March Alderman Dave Schmidtzkrieg got into trouble with Mayor Howard and his council lapdogs for daring to disclose public business to the public.

The PRU Crew decided to nominate Ald. Dave for a Sunshine Troublemaker of the Week award, and Ald. Dave won!

The Open Records blog wrote, "Alderman Schmidt’s response to a “resolution of condemnation” signed by the Mayor and several other alderman is that it is an: …illegal resolution [which] will have absolutely no effect on how I conduct myself as an alderman, so the mayor’s behind-the-scenes machinations were a complete waste of time.”

As with most things, time is the test. So we are very pleased to see that Ald. Dave is making good on his promise to continue to be open and honest with the public. And we are very pleased to see Ald. Dave has made that promise part of his campaign platform.

Addendum -- The fine folks over at the Open Records blog have taken notice!

I am very used to politicians breaking promises, but I think of all the promises I have heard politicians make, Alderman Dave might be one of the few who won't break his promise of communicating government business to the people. I am happy Alderman Dave is giving us a choice in the next town election if Mayor Frimark runs again. I already know what choice I will be making.

I agree with Anonymous 3:23. It's about time we got rid of the "politicians" and got people in office who are willing to be honest with us and tell us the truth, not hide things and lie like the current occupant in the big office at Butler Place.

What a sad state of affairs when a candidate finds himself having to run on a platform that promises to bring open discussion and debate back into our democracy...but such is the way of things under Howard Frimark's rule of government.

Whether Howard runs himself, or finds a stand-in/proxy...I look forward to the contest.

I think Ald.Dave S. and his suggestion to have the question on the upcoming April ballot
on whether or not the PEOPLE
want to see the city go farther
into the hole to the tune of
16.+ million for a new PD - station
is the best way.

Let the people speak!

Folks, go to the City's website. Alderman Dave's proposed referendum is posted under the agenda for the December 1 Council meeting along with supporting information which shows just how diore the situation is. If folks want to have a voice on this issue without having to get 3000 signatures for a referendum themselves, they need to show up and let the aldermen know.

Make that a "dire" situation.

Or should I say it is supposed to be posted along with the agenda which is also missing. Stay tuned.

It's there... you just gotta look really hard.

I wonder what the other six will say? How could they possibly go against this proposal for a referendum when the city's financials are such a mess and spending the kind of money they are talking about flies in the face of fiscal responsibility...

A police station referendum would serve the same purpose as the Library referendum six years ago: It would prove or disprove all the "everybody wants a new police station" humbug, just like it dispelled the "everybody wants a new library" humbug.

Which is why Frimark and his new police station cheerleaders on the City Council don't want the issue to go to referendum: Because it's easier to tell the big lie when you don't have a vote total proving that it's a lie.

Good luck, Ald. Dave, but you're fighting an uphill battle.

I just LOVE the article in the Herald-Advocate that quotes the oh-so-brilliant Ald. Allegretti who states that he isn't aware of the displeasure of the citizens of PR in how city meetings/processes are handled publicly. He says something like, "well no one one has ever told me that."
here's the deal Mr. Alderman--you have to ANSWER THE PHONE, RETURN A PHONE CALL, READ YOUR EMAILS. You do the clueless thing so well...

Great feedback and comments made here.

The city must not run this local gov't like an good old boys club.

Wake up Howie!

Sure...you leave each weekend
and we are stuck here with all
the crap that you have pushed
through.

It's people first sir.
Property second.
