Half Full or Half Empty?

Take a good look at the above picture of Mayor Schmidtzkrieg. Do you think the Mayor would tell you his head is half full of hair, or half empty?

The PRU Crew is guessing the Mayor would tell you his head is half full of hair. Because he's such a positive, optimistic and compromising guy.

The PRU Crew would tell Mayor Schmidtzkrieg he may want to wear a hat anyway. Because the part of his head that isn't half full of hair is going to freeze in the winter or get burned in the summer. The Crew's negative, pessimistic and uncompromising like that.

And because the Mayor is such a positive, optimistic and compromising guy, we suspect he will allow the sun to set today without issuing a veto of the changes to the process in the new Planning and Zoning ordinance. Like we said -- we're negative and pessimistic. We're also disappointed but we saw it coming when we read articles in both the Park Ridge Herald-Advocate ('Mayor mulls veto of zoning process change') and the Journal & Topics ('Council Has Final Word On Billboards') -- Nothing beats a positive, optimistic compromise like having everybodys' thought process disrupted!

Here's the PRU Crew's thought process --

Aldermen should not be promoting changes to the zoning ordinance on behalf of any individual seeker or special interest. Period. Council recommended zoning text and map amendments should be considered with a "global view" -- meaning, as to how any recommended changes would or could affect the entire community. Anything less is spot zoning on behalf of special interests. And that's bad government.

Aldermen who allow themselves to be used as tools -- and we don't mean that in any nice way, how you doin' Allspaghetti? -- by individual special interests are also allowing those special interests to circumvent the disclosure process. And that's really bad government.

Mayor Schmidtzkrieg has reportedly said the requirement for a super-majority vote to override denials by the Planning and Zoning Commission removes the incentive for individual special interests to seek a Council sponsor. And like we said earlier, Mayor Schmidtzkrieg would probably tell you his head is half full of hair too.

The PRU Crew is now wondering if the actual contents of the Mayor's head is half full...or half empty.

Some of the aldermen are grabbing for power because they know their time left is limited.

I guess Mayor Dave is trying to find a compromise and work with who he has to but I'm not sure this is the way to do it.

Yes, it's today -- in the article link we posted to the Advocate.

The aldermen will just override a Schmidt veto. Why bother?

Fine...then make them do it.

I'm not ready to say the mayor has drunk the politician koolaid, but I'm not impressed with some of his decisions lately. I see the mayor trying to do his best to protect the Planning and Zoning committee. Maybe trying to do that is too optimistic. I don't know. I think we need new aldermen.

Prudos to PRU!!

It is good to see you holding the Mayor to task when you disagree with him after you pushed his campaign.

The next good idea that comes out of Allegretti's mouth will be the first. But since the mayor crumpled like a Dixie cup on that Frimark insurance deal he just wants to be loved.

Another one bites the dust.

I look forward to another nasty email, since *somebody* is probably going to think *I* wrote your comment...

Schmidt should have voted to go after the Frimark violation. I do not understand why he didn't.

I think it's a seperate issue from a veto though. I think Schmidt should tell the aldermen to redo the ordinance and make it illegal to have the aldermen representing special interests.

Here's how it works on the Council:

(A) you go on for selfish reasons (the prospect of getting more business, usually), and you either (1) follow through on your selfish inclinations and become everything that's wrong with government, or (2) by some miracle, you become a bigger, better person and actually start looking out for the public's interest.

Or....

(B)You go on for altruistic and appropriate and reasons, and either (1) you remain true to your principles, even if it's hard or if you become very unpopular as a result, or (2) you really want to remain true to your principals, but it turns out that, golly, the ruling clique is just such a bunch of nice guys that you can't bear to hurt their feelings. And so you turn....

I see our boy Dave is becoming a textbook example of (B)(2).

Loved the Mayor's last paragraph in the Spokesman today.

Too funny!

Isn't it possible that there could be 2 reasonable and unselfish ideas that disagree on what is best for the city?

I was reading the Spokesman as well and something confused me. The Mayor states "The Task Force's final reprot is due early next year." Did the due date change or am I confused?? Was it not due to be released in a Oct/Nov timeframe?

Even for us, your comment was too gratuitous to publish.

We thought we'd have health insurance by October, too, but being liked matters more, I guess.
Damnit, I hate when PRU's cynicism is well-founded!
