Would This Work?

The City Council has another COW meeting (.pdf) scheduled for this evening -- beginning at 7:00 pm at City Hall.

Feel free to attend and do your own kind of COW tipping -- hold their hands, give the Council tips on representation, and tell them what to do -- since there seem to be people of the opinion elected officials shouldn't be expected to figure out basic representative tasks on their own.

Also scheduled for this evening, prior to the Council COW, is a Council Workshop set to begin at 6:30 pm at City Hall. The agenda includes a single line item --

"PRESENTATION OF PRELIMINARY REPORT BY THE FLOOD CONTROL TASK FORCE."

So we've got that going for us too!

Some time tomorrow we anticipate more Motionbox magic!

Maybe Mayor DipSchmidt will take the time tonight to clear up any confusion about what a "supermajority" vote is...?

In two different articles in the J&T, about the proposed billboard ordinance change, it was reported...

***If the council approves similar language to Loss' desire with 500 feet of spacing and much larger billboards, the veto would likely be forthcoming. "At this point I would not be inclined to support that," Schmidt said.

If he did veto the change, a supermajority of the aldermen, five of seven, would be required to overturn the veto."***

and...

***Schmidt also explained that under state statute, the council is defined as the mayor and the aldermen, meaning that a supermajority of the council as written in the change, includes his vote and requires six votes for an overturn. "Six votes, period," Schmidt said. "Not two thirds of who's in attendance." He explained if there were only five members in attendance, "It would be impossible to have a supermajority."***

So, which is it...5 of 7, or 6 of 7? Are there different (State statutes?) definitions of what a supermajority is and when?

PRU-

Nothing to say about the COW meetings or the flooding task force, butttttttttttt I would like to give a huge, huge, really huge shout out to the Park Ridge Falcons, 8th Grade All American team who returned from sunny Orlando, Fl this weekend with the National Championship Trophy under their belts. Wooooooooooooo Hoooooooooo!!!!!!!!!

The beat teams from Norfolk, Va and Charlotte, NC to meet the Brooklyn, NY Chiefs Friday in the National Championship game. The Chiefs were kicked to the curb like everyone else, and the Falcons completed a perfect season, going 16-0, and giving up only 46 points through those 16 games, which included 12 shutouts !!!!

Kudos to the players and tremendous coaching staff for a great season, and delivering the Facons' 4th National title in 9 years !!!

I saw that and was wondering about it too. It could be the reporter got the story mixed up. The mayor sounds certain in his quote for the state laws.

given a choice between Schmidt, Esq. being confoosed and the "journalist" being confoosed, I'd take Schmidt's word for what's so, especially about a law, statute, etc.

Anonymous at 5:59,

If it were the H-A reporter, I'd have no doubt about who/which is more likely to be correct...but...

Additionally...there was I time I would have simply taken Schmidt's word for something (without verifying) and moved along. Now? Not so much...

Schmidt's words and actions (which speak louder by far...as well as words unspoken and INactions too, for that matter) and time and experience has provided...elucidation.

In short, trust but verify. Personally, I'm going with "verify" and leaving "trust" off the table.
