There Goes The Neighborhood! A Two-fer.

Item #1

Just look at those happy little bastards, especially that one on the lower left. Who needs that in the neighborhood?

Two stories about a local child care center, Christie's Carousel of Learning operating out of the Park Ridge Presbyterian Church, 1300 W. Crescent Ave., caught the attention of the PRU Crew last week.

We first read about the issue of a special use permit for the center in the Journal & Topics:
Residents Raise Day Care Concerns; then in the Herald-Advocate: Neighbors object to preschool's relocation, playground plans.

According to the Herald-Advocate report, Alderman Jim Allspaghetti (4th Ward) said that, "the school generates too much traffic and is an inappropriate use for the residential area." The report went on to say that Allspaghetti, "whose ward includes the Presbyterian Church, said he has received calls from many neighbors who are unhappy that the school moved there." Maybe Allspaghetti's constituents told him they would rather have 4-story condominium projects that exceed the new city zoning code for density? We're just wondering...

Both reports included an interesting piece of information about the fact that until recently the "center was located for more than 20 years in St. Mary's Episcopal Church. That church recently asked them to leave because they wanted to use the center's space for other things."

Things that make you go hhhmmmm...

Item #2

The PRU Crew knows how to throw a party. We get together and read meeting minutes and agendas for city committees and commissions. We are nothing if not one helluva rockin' good time!

We hadn't checked in on the Human Needs Task Force for a while, so we decided to make their most recent set of posted October minutes and November agenda part of our party games.

Then we remembered another recent story we read in the Herald-Advocate: Hope for the homeless: Churches hope to start PADS program here

We wonder if the newly available space at St. Mary's Episcopal Church is being readied for a PADS Program? Any knowledgeable PRU readers out there?

Or maybe Aldermoron Allspaghetti thinks his constituents would rather have a homeless shelter in their local Presbyterian church?

All together now -

It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood,
A beautiful day for a neighbor.
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?

It's a neighborly day in this beauty wood,
A neighborly day for a beauty.
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?

I've always wanted to have a neighbor just like you.
I've always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you.
So, let's make the most of this beautiful day.
Since we're together we might as well say:
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?
Won't you be my neighbor?

Won't you please,Won't you please?
Please won't you be my neighbor?

The future of America...

PRU should look closer at the activities of the chair of the P.R. Fair Housing Commission who has made it her personal goal to turn Park Ridge into a homeless haven. She is working closely with PADS to bring in the homeless.

I too became curious after reading the article in the Nov. 8th edition. My guess is that this has already been talked about, seeing that it had already reached the press. But when I called my Alderman he really didn't know too much about it. So I went ahead and did a little research on my own.

Pads full name is Journey from Pads to Hope and they are based out of Palitine. There are several Pads facilities conveniently located in communities that run along the NW train tracks, Park Ridge would just be another stop along the way. Most shelters are open 1 night a week and clients are referred to the shelter location of the day. Sort of like a traveling party whose host is a diffeternt church within the program each night.

Their missions and goals are as stated "To deliver shelter and supportive services to individuals and families with children experiencing homlessness, and to assist their transition into safe, decent, AFFORDABLE, permannent housing."

They are an organization who derives funding from private, corporate, FEDERAL(HUD), county, and local municipalities.

My understanding is the want to set up a shelter in P.R to fill the gap between P.R and Evanston.

it seems to me that the Fair Housing Commission is a quietly operating group, which scares me. Is this right, or am I just missing their propaganda?

Just because those of us who live near Park Ridge Pres don't particularly want a day-care center there doesn't mean that we would prefer a four-story condo. Why do we need to make that choice?

But I do see how you people might condclude that Allegretti is not being consistent after his vote on Executive Office Plazza.

I strongly encourage PRU--and everyone else--to look into the activities of anyone who might want to assist the less fortunate among us.

A famous troublemaker once said, "when I was a stranger you invited me in, and when I was hungry you gave me food...."

Heaven forbid that we have any of THAT in Park Ridge.

A men dressed in old english clothes enters the law office of James Allegretti

GENTLEMAN #1

At this festive season of the year, Mr. Allegretti,it is more than usually desirable that we should make some slight provision for the Poor and Destitute, who suffer greatly at the present time. Many thousands are in want of common necessaries; hundreds of thousands are in want of common comforts, sir.

ALLEGRETTI

Are there no prisons?

GENTLEMAN #1

Plenty of prisons,' said the gentleman, laying down the pen again.

ALLEGRETTI

And the Union workhouses? Are they still in operation?

GENTLEMAN #2

They are. Still, I wish I could say they were not.

ALLEGRETTI

Oh! I was afraid, from what you said at first, that something had occurred to stop them in their useful course. I'm very glad to hear it.

Would you call these fine leaders of tomorrow - trust fund kids??

As for the homeless coming to PK - hey they are all ready here.

Just wait until the new taxes kickin....many more will be on the road out of here.

We don't need the homeless running around our schools, homes etc.

homeless in PR? of course we should help out those less fortunate. But remember those famous words--"give me your tired, your poor, your hungry."
We may live to regret it.

yes...." M "

we should except thos less unfortunate souls....but
what will we do when the bus
loads start coming in ?

Once the word gets out that Mayor
HF will give them the following:

3 - hots

and a cot

or 3 - slops

and a flop !

Park Ridge ....home of the brave
and land of the free......

I'm betting Mayor Frimark is torn between figuring out a way to get imported homeless people to register to vote and support his next ill-conceived initiative and all of his supporters who fear "those kind of people."

Little kids and a pre-school?? I am not sure I see a problem....you don't like traffic and kids..my suggestion is move! Park Ridge should be encouraging young families to move in by keeping fabulous pre-schools around like Chritie's Carousel of Learning! I think there are other issues to worrry about?

A pre-school is an "invasion" of your neighborhood??? Property value going down because of a pre-school..I thought good schools raise property value?? That is what we were told when it was time to vote on the schools. Isn't "invasion" a little harsh about a pre-school that relocated from 4 or 5 blocks down?? The school was there for 25 years and I don't think there were any 4 hour town meetings about the traffic?? Anyway it seems to me with all the "overlooking of permits" the city made, there should be no questions about a special permit. The owners of the school did what they were required to do and what they were told to do. The city should take the fall and give the permit~ not the owners of the pre-school and all the expenses it will take to get it.

At least the Pres Church has a large parking lot where parents can park and walk their kiddies in to school. When the pre-school was located at St. Mary's it was a nightmare getting past the parents dropping kids off. Since Delphia isn't a high traffic thru street I hardly think there'll be a problem. It's more likely a case of NIMBY.

Let's all be careful out there this winter season !

Slow down.....please !!!!

To the Neighbors of Christie's Carousel of Learning oppossed to the sounds of toddlers laughing in "their" neighborhood, to have to look past the tall shrubs to see....a playground...and children being safe, having fun & playing... Sorry for the terrible living conditions you must endure.

Remember one thing, just like a merry-go-round, what goes around, comes around.
