RIF - Reading Is Fundamental!

"As Mayor Howard Frimark's car went past along Cumberland Avenue, Park Ridge resident Adrienne Dimopoulos (right) and her aunt, Pauline Zane of Chicago held up signs protesting the proposed study to detemine whether Cumberland Avenue can be extended across the Union Pacific line to Busse Highway." (Eric Davis/for Pioneer Press)

In today's Herald-Advocate, we find the above photo and caption (emphasis added) from this past Monday's Memorial Day parade.

There were other signs on display by residents also opposed to the idea of extending Cumberland Ave. under the train tracks to Busse Hwy.

We can't say for certain, but we're pretty sure those residents weren't protesting "the study." We're pretty sure those residents don't care what "the study" concludes. We're pretty sure those residents were protesting the proposal to extend Cumberland Ave. under the train tracks.

But we understand the desire of some in the local press to give Mayor Howard a helping hand when they can.

But we must say today's Herald-Advocate editorial about extending Cumberland Ave. may be one of the best efforts at discussion we've ever seen from that paper. PRUdos!

yet...do you think the mayor even GOT the message?
He probably thought the signs were invitations for coffee.

Priceless. The best part is the “Howard Frimark Mayor” signs that he made by altering his “Howard Frimark for Mayor” signs. Is this an attempt to show how frugal he is or is this guy broke? I think my next door neighbor’s kid did the same thing when he ran for class president. What an embarrassment to this community.

What it does show is that Howard has his signs ready to go for next year's election.

Question is, who will run against the weasel?

I hadn't realized the Mayor has a comb over.

As we've seen time after time, every one of these "studies" turns into an endorsement and a "how to" for the project because the people doing the study know why they've been hired, and how they can increase their chances of being hired again, both by that same governmental body or others who work off the same playbook.

The same thing can be said for most of those "citizen" committees and commissions where the "usual suspects" (and occasionally a few "straights" just to make it look legit) are rounded up to "study" an issue and make a recommendation - which is why, absent a major outpouring of public opposition, the current Frimark-appointed Planning & Zoning Commission will happily expand R-5 zoning to allow the developers and land speculators to cash in to the max on their real estate "investments."

Wake up, folks! Judas and his Judettes are selling our city down the river, but for a lot more than 30 pieces of silver.

I think it was very gracious to give "prudos" to the paper today because it does seem as if pru doesn't like the press very much.

I think also that the Advocate editorial was excellent today. The thought it gave to all the costs of what this Cumberland project could mean and the last question they asked is right on the mark. This project makes no sense, but is especially terrible in tough economic times. I do think it could bankrupt the city treasury.

Before Cumberland Ave can be extended, would't it have to be paved?

Hello Wild Irish,

Actually, no -- they would build the extension first, then pave it.

Maybe you are thinking of the area of Cumberland further South that is a hazardous obstacle course of potholes and cracks?

Anybody know who Howard's driver was?

>>Anybody know who Howard's driver was?<<

It was probably Mr. Bag-o-doughnuts, like it always is.

Indeed, PRU Crew, that was my ironic reference. But looking forward into the future of traffic flow, how will the already congested intersection of Touhy and NW Highway fare when those condos are fully occupied in a decade or so? Will the fumes from the backed up traffic interfere with upscale cookouts on those luxurious balconies overlooking Touhy, or merely blend in with the fragrance of lighter fluid.

That picture looks like it was taken just about the time Frimark was riding past the 300 - 400 block of Cumblerland and he was ducking from the view of not only the anti-"Cumberland Pass" group but the many anti-PADS "NIMBY" neighbors to St. Mary's.
I thought he was going to tumble into the back seat and out of view.
That's our Mayor!!!

Wondering,

He wasn't ducking you...he just dropped his dignity in the car and was looking for it.

What a great misuse of the day and parade that is suppose to honor those who have given their lives for our country.

Thank you.

You're stone-cold right! 80-90% of the people in the parade had nothing to do with the spirit of Memorial Day. That goes for the Maine Township Democrats and Republicans, all those fake Indian tribe kids, or Lindy's Dog Training Institute.

I propose that next year the parade organizers require that any group, club, organization, or individual who wants to March MUST have a "certified" American military veteran marching or riding with them?

And make sure the bands play patriotic music, too. I don't remember what the elementary school bands were playing, but the Maine South Band was great!

If you are referring to the people voicing their opinions on, and opposition to, the questionable leadership of Mayor Liemark, on the contrary - those who have given their lives for our country and who we seek to honor fought for the very rights exercised by those protesting.

The only thing necessary for the triumph of Mayor Liemark - err, evil - is for good men and women to do nothing.

There is no greater honor we can give our friends and family members that we have lost in war, then to exercise the rights we have. The rights that they so bravely fought for!

As the father of a "fake Indian Tribe kid", I am sincerely sorry our presence so offended you during the parade. I do the best I can in my own way to remember and honor our fallen men and women, and those serving around the world, on a daily basis.

As for my daughter, well, please find it in your heart to forgive her. She is still trying to master writing her name.
