We warn visitors in our banner, and as our regular PRU readers have come to know, the PRU Crew doesn't pull many punches when being irreverent and unrepentant. We most often write about our displeasure and disagreement with many of our local institutions, public figures, and those who step into the public policy arena. We challenge their thinking, their motives, and their actions. And no matter who they are, what title they hold, or how long they've lived in Park Ridge, if we feel they are acting like asshats, we're going to say so.
Also as our regular readers have come to know, the local press is as much a target for our criticism as are our local elected officials.
But not today.
It is with great satisfaction that the PRU Crew offers MAJOR PRUdos to the editorial writer for today's Herald-Advocate
The editor has penned a piece in celebration of Sunshine Week, which begins March 15, 2009. In the piece the writer says in part --
"While the week is widely celebrated by news organizations, it is important that every citizen recognize the importance of the openness of your government, whether it is the federal, state or local municipality. You are entitled to know how the government decides to spend taxpayer money, whom it hires to do government business and what important decisions it makes that affect you, your tax dollars and the community in which you live."
"...some elected officials would like to conduct important business in closed meetings or to keep the business conducted in those meetings private."
"So it is important that you continue to fight for openness. Because it is important for citizens to remain informed. The more information they have access to, the easier it is for people to be informed."
Bingo!

Open Government should be the RULE, not the exception.
Sounds like something Dave Schmidt might have written!
And here's a PRU blast from the past... check this link out: http://openrecords.wordpress.com/2008/03/13/david-schmidt-sunshine-troublemaker-of-the-week/
Can't wait until April 7th!
Excellent!
This is all fine and good, but what are the papers doing to help us get information? The reporters who attend meetings that I have been at never ask any questions. They only sit and take notes.
I agree with those who say the PRU and the Public Watchdog can be negative, but almost every news story I read in the papers is negative. The PRU and the Public Watchdog include their negative opinions on alot of the news and that is what I think certain people object to.
I don't remember seeing papers from the city being posted on the newspapers websites or heard about the newspapers getting information out to us that certain politicians want to keep secret. I have only seen those documents posted on the blogs and that is why I continue to read the blogs, because I am one of those persons who is trying to pay attention and be an informed voter. I don't agree with every opinion written by the blogs, but in the final end I make my own mind up anyway, and the opinions written make me think about things.
To the PRU I say, it is nice to see you giveing PRUdos to the editors of the Advocate, but until they put into practice all the flowery language and high minded opinion in their editorial today, I would appreciate it if you and the Public Watchdog stick around.
Thank you.
I agree with the first comment that open government should be the rule.
For the anonymous March 5, 2009 12:39 PM, I believe your points are well made.
It is our responsibility to hold our public officials accountable for their actions. The best way to do that is to continue the fight for openness as said in the editorial, so we can have information about what is going on.
I hope many people are paying attention during this election process and will show up at the polls to cast an informed vote for more open government.
How do you have the time to cover all of this?
How DO you have time to cover everything? Not that I'm complaining, I find myself checking quite often for updates.
