Free! Free! Freewheeling!

Feel free to express your independence and independent thoughts here!

The PRU Crew will be on vacation through the July 4th holiday, but we'll be checking-in periodically and posting your comments as necessary.

Hey PU crew, why are there so many assholes living in Park Ridge?

anonymous 12:27,

The ground is so fertile for it.

Top 5 List:

5. Toxic waste under the Maine South athletic field.

4. Inbreeding.

3. When in doubt, blame Hillary.

2. We're the next step up the evolutionary ladder from Norridge.

1. Too much money, not enough class.

Seems to me that PRU allows all points of view on a particular topic. Sometimes there is bitter response or snide commentary, but the points of view are out there. I'm pretty sure that's how it's supposed to work.

Consider what other fora we have for discussion of local issues: the local rags, the occasional Council or committee meeting, school/church parking lots, and Starbucks. PRU (even with its imperfections) has them all beat.

Accordingly, I would like to thank the PRU crew for making this opportunity available. At least some Park Ridge residents are more informed, and more interested in local issues, as a result of the PRU.

To the First Amendment!

Perhaps a educated response would speak of the new type of resident in the community and not bring it to as low as saying it may be inbreeding. We may also state it could possibly be the fact that we have online message boards that are run by people who censor comments. In order for this blog to gain some respect people's comments should be posted immediately, not letting "the man" have the hand over them. Park Ridge needs to come back to its roots as a town founded by educated hard working people who fight for the simple things in life. Sadly it has become about fighting for minuscule things such as a group of people coming in once week for shelter. I can tell you that people who lived in this community for a long time (20 years plus) are gravely dissapointed with the majority of new residents who are trying to push their own agendas and our making things more complicated than they really need to be. I am not pushing for a downgrading of free speech but feel that if this blog is to gain credibility people's post need to be posted without censor. Many of mine comments have not been posted and many other people have had the same experience.

If it weren't for this blog, you wouldn't have any outlet for your comments, so be grateful for it with whatever minor flaws you think it has. Or start writing letters to the Advocate and see how many of them get published.

What "simple things in life" do you want to fight for? I've lived in this community for 20 years plus and am glad to see people who actually have "agendas" - so long as they're up-front about them and don't hide them behind a lot of warm & fuzzy b.s. Anybody who doesn't have an "agenda" is either lying or stupid (and/or passionless).

Thanks!

Hey jfahren2, please elaborate on what "agendas" of those new residents you don't like. I'll start, in case you need a little shove.

My agenda is to find a way to elect people in local government who don't lie to us all the time about what they're doing and why, so that we can make informed decisions about what direction our city, our schools and our park district is headed.

See, it's not that difficult.

RE the PADS shelter: frankly I'd be more worried that the juvenile delinquents wandering around PR would assault the homeless than vice versa.

Re " Its never wrong to do the right thing". (Fr. Carl M.)

It is when you don't have a right to impose your will on anybody else. But Fr. M's parishioners have been letting him get away with that for so long that he probably doesn't even realize it's wrong.

Anon 12:34:

Your statement references "you don't have a right to impose your will on anybody else". Ahhhh if it were only possible!!

First of all, it seems to me that in a church environment there are tenets of the faith and the church makes the calls on these. As I have said on these boards before, it is not a democracy.

Second, I think you might hear a different argument from those "of the faith". I have to be careful here as I am not Catholic or a regular church goer but wouldn't they say it is not about my will or your will but about God's will?

Third of all, even in the secular world, peoples wills are imposed on others all the time. Traditionally the majorities will is imposed on the minority. Sometimes it is those in power who impose their will.

This is one of the reasons why religion and public policy don't mix. A concensus cannot even be reached among those of the Catholic faith.

My comments were simply directed at the manager of th blog to get everyones comments posted and it sems to me that he/she are beginning to do so. I believe this blog serves a purpose in our community and the ideas/thoughts expressed here are rational and just and should be fought for in our local government. Which alderman will go and who may one suggest for future alderman?

We can only hope that the message of freedom and liberty will still ring true for all in 20 yrs from now.

Imagine what fuel costs will be and
the basic staples such as food.

Man will destroy this planet. So forget PK Ridge...or is that still a part of this planet ?

Thank you.

Ms. Manchester:
The IT recycling was a huge hit; so much so that I believe there are thoughts of perhaps having a second one. Contact either the Park Ridge Garden Club or the Chamber of Commerce to ask about a second IT recycling event.

Glad to see you put so much thought and effort into you witty and insightful posting. Can't imagine why, after all that effort, so obviously taxing for you, that you decided to hide behind an Anonymous posting.

JFahren2:
Free speech is a lovely concept, but it was always premised on the idea of decorum, the ability to express an opinion while keeping other people's feelings and sensibilities in mind. I'm all for the first concept, but rue the fact that second is observed by so few. If people can't edit themselves, then so be it, they should be edited. This site's credibility isn't increased when "free speech" means the freedom to be insulting and an idiot. In point of fact, its credibility will be destroyed, because the people who regularly post here will stop and those of us, like myself, who check in once a week will simply stop, because they see no value in a site rife with such comments.

Contrary to jfahren2's statements, we do not edit posters comments -- that was a determination we made early on. We do however refuse to post comments, as regular PRU readers know, that are bullshit or libel. And in jfahren2's case, whiney as all hell. We did not post three of jfahren2's comments because after he/she/it originally commented, he/she/it came back with 3 more comments whining that we hadn't posted the first. jfahren is new to our blog but we figured he/she/it would catch on, and he/she/it seems to have done that.

As to the statement that we have not posted "many" of jfahren2's comments, please see above. As to the statement that we have not posted "many" comments from others, that is simply false. We post almost everything we receive, save for the bullshit and libel previously discussed.

For those who have submitted comments that have not been posted, that do not fall under our "no bullshit/no libel" rule, ask us about it. Blogger software is sometimes not perfect and comments have gotten lost in the past. We have notification records of all submitted comments. If we've missed one, we can check the records. If it's been lost to the blogger comment black hole, that's a software issue we have no control over.

And for anybody who may wonder, nobody on the PRU Crew deleted jfahren2's first comment on this thread -- he/she/it did that, as having a blogger account allows.

Hmmm, this morning on the Jonathon Brandmeier radio show (97.9 FM The Loop), several Park Ridge residents called to confirm that Park Ridge is the Northern Illinois leader for marijuana consumption. How nice. Three people called in to say that there's tons of pot being smoked in Park Ridge. The callers didn't sound like high schoolers either.

It was also pretty cool that the Mayor thinks the Youth Campus residents needing "mentoring." I heard that one of the residents actually bit another resident's nipple completely off during an attack, ran to a toilet, and flushed it away.

The paramedics had never seen such a horrific wound before.

Mentoring. Sure, that'll work....

While I do think there is an inordinate amount of substance abuse in Park Ridge (alcohol especially, but other stuff, too), I don't believe call-ins to Johnny B's radio show prove much of anything.

Anonymous said...

How and why did they let Mike Tyson into a girls youth campus?

Anonymous said...

I am on OVERLOAD after the last few comments.
Sometimes I think that people complain about the Youth Campus because they are developers who want that land. I see perhaps my view is wrong.

How funny that Johnny B is chatting about the pot smoking in PR. While I dont think the callers to his show can be called "experts" I can state from personal knowledge that the woods across from Maine South (From Devon to Bristol Court) REEK of pot at any given time of the day.

And finally...to the PRPD--hope it's a safe 4th. It is heartbreaking to see a CPD officer buried for the random craziness that went on the other night. Be safe out there.

As sent to the Journal Speak Out.

Shirts, please!

OMG......my eyes hurt! Why is it that men don’t need to wear shirts in public? This might have been acceptable back in the day, on the farm, back in the day when a man was built like a man, and air conditioning unheard of, but in this day and age there ought to be a law. My goodness, being overweight and obese is becoming such a norm today,... (well that is a topic for another day!) All that being said and trying to get back on track here... Hey guys, I don’t want to see you out there cutting your lawn bare chested, with your man boobs flopping in the breeze. Do you really think anyone wants to look at that? That goes for you skinny old men too with your plaid shorts and no shirt on with long gray hairs sticking out all over your chest and back. Come on, you know who I’m talking about! If you’re at the pool, well good for you, don’t forget your sun block. Anywhere else...there should be a law against topless men. We have laws for everything else. Women, hah, can we go out without our shirts on without being arrested? Do our lawn work, and chores topless? Ride our bikes down busy roads getting a tan without strap marks? Keep a tank top on the back floor of the car so when we go to 7-11 we can just slip it on so we have our shirt and shoes for service. Hang out at the company cookout - literally? Is there someone out there that can explain all this equal rights stuff out there? Is the law backwards? Where did it come from? Guys.....your chance to speak up here? Fight for women’s equal right to also go bare chested! We need your help now! Call you congress person, local representatives. I don’t know if I am serious or just joking here anymore but something just isn’t right with this anymore. It’s time to turn the tables.......sure you guys might see a few ladies chest worth slowing the car down for, but wait til you see granny out there weeding her flower bed, can she tie them in a knot? Can she tie them in a Bow? Can she throw them over her shoulder like a Continental soldier? Or wait til Miss Obesity 2008 gets a bit warm outside sipping on her cola and munching on her bucket of chicken and decides to take her top off to cool off next to your next cookout or family picnic area. Yeah....it just ain’t right! Shirts please!

Good point on toplessness. Ban it for anybody over 30, and for anybody under 30 who is more than 10% over their ideal body weight. Make the fines big enough that nobody will want to risk being ticketed. Then go after the ugly people.
