Referendum Madness!

from: Reefer Madness (1936)

People, tell your children! Keep them safe from the degenerating terrors of referendum madness! It could lead to brainwashing and communism!

It starts innocently enough -- a lone alderman diabolically proposes a referendum. The next thing you know people are going crazy in the streets -- trying to take over local businesses in their effort to collect signatures on petitions! The referendum scourge is only temporarily averted by the bravery of those willing to confront the problem!

Before you know it, the menacing dangers of this referendum madness have spread to the seats of power! And other aldermen begin to take part in this democratic debauchery by offering more referendum madness to the voters! Even Don Bachtard (3rd ward) our reliable Constitutional UNscholar has been heard to utter his desire for placing a referendum question on the ballot asking voters if they want to fund the fight against O'Hare expansion!

Now, even our Senators and Representatives are pushing this insanity from the devil's garden of democracy! And the PRU Crew has been told our Maine Township officials have fallen for this trickery!

Three referendum questions will appear on the April ballot asking voters for their opinions on government matters!

It's referendum madness!

Hilarious PRU! Reefer Madness was a cult classic when I was in college. I remember it well.

I'd like to know what the Senators and Reps are pushing. Your links are terrific but that one did not work for me

Yup, we just love the way pioneer local manages their websites.

The link should be fixed now. Thank you for the heads up.

In case the web wizards at pioneer local hiccup again, here is the beginning of the article --

"A group of legislators is asking township officials throughout suburban Cook County to put an advisory referendum on the April ballot in an effort to gauge support of the county's 1 percent sales tax hike that took effect last year.

Sen. Matt Murphy R-27th, of Palatine, Sen. Dan Kotowski D-33rd, of Park Ridge, Rep. Fred Crespo D-44th, of Hoffman Estates and Sen. John Millner, R-94th, of Carol Stream, recently sent letters to all townships within the county.

They asked officials to consider including a question on the ballot asking residents if they would support the continuation of the 1 percent hike."

"Do you support paying higher taxes for a corrupt county government?" Hmmmmmm. Let me think.

it's like they've all been in a deep winter hibernation and somebody woke them up!

Oh, yes! Of course we want to support more taxes especially with these airplanes reminding us minute by minute of how much money Chicago needs from it's neighbors. I'd LOVE to give "King Richard" more than the value of my home.
Hey guess who is running for re election....give up? Arlene Mulder mayor of Arlington Heights..the one who is the Executive Director of ONCC. Anyone in PR ready to contribute to her OPPONENT'S campaign????? I'm up for that one. By the way if you have comments or questions for her, please attend the ONCC meeting on FEB. 6 8:00 a.m. Rosewood restaurant in Rosemont.

Ya gotta love Bach. He "kind of" wants to know what the voters think about spending $150,000 per year on ORD-REST, but he doesn't (not even "kind of") want to know what we think about spending $16.5 million (plus another $10 million more on interest) on a new police station.

Bach thinks his referendum is "a more valuable referendum than the other two [police station ones] by far."

Now I see why PRU calls him "Bachtard."

are you referring to Mayor Mulder of Arlington Heights?
Arlington Heights being the town that no longer has air traffic over its head because it is now going over Park Ridge?
That Arlene Mulder?!!!!!!!!!

Yeah like it's really her fault.

Did you see Frimark's quote in the Journal story about the casino? "I did convey unto Mr. Arredia that...the casino really has no benefit to us."

"Convey unto"???

So Blago is channeling Ghandi and Teddy Roosevelt, and Frimark is channeling Matthew, Mark, Luke or John!

As long as he does not start begetting everwhere . . .

or I may be getting out of town!

Good old Dan Kotowski and the others
I see are looking out in my best interest????

One thing is for sure...your wallet is safe down in Springfield...right
danger dan.....

One thing is for certain...Lt.Gov.Pat Quinn maybe our next gov...but the greedy, slimmy, slick butt approach to all of the problems is tax and spend !

Somethings never change!
Watch what Quinn does in his first 100 days....maybe he can turn water into whine and raise the dead
too like Obama!

Have you seen downtown Arlington Heights lately? Not just the downtown area has been developed tastefully. Looks very nice! Booming! Revenue generating business! Road conditions being addressed! Now no planes! Maybe we should pay to have Mulder move to PR and run for mayor! Say what you want, I believe she is doing a good job.

Why stop at a Casino?

Let's put an OTB as a part of the Higgins corridor. We can make it a "gambler's lane" of sorts. One stop shopping for those that want to play games of chance!

Now if there was just someone in town with knowledge of the horse racing industry?

hmmmm...who could it be? Who? think..think..think.
DUH!

Anon at 7:31, I agree that she's done a lot of good for Arlington Heights; BUT they have a bad PADS problem there. Not sure if she can do anything about that, especially when you consider the execs of PADS all live in AH....but I don't think she should be ignoring it.

Anonymous said...

Anon @9:35

I agree. PADS is an issue. A safety issue. However, one issue to contend with versus the PR list of many.

My opinion only, but the casino, I believe, will bring some more major issues to PR that are comparable to the PADS from a safety standpoint.

Dear 8:40
Yeah THAT Mulder....great job giving us the shaft and acting like nothing more than just another Daley puppet.
One way of getting ONCC to do more than bullfeather
us is to let Mulder know we can effect the outcome of her re election. Leverage...its all we're left with thanks to Frimark. How about picketing her office????? Signs could say "We understand your frustration" . That's all we get from her.

Your comments always seem to SPAN oh so many topics.

How about we lay off the sauce, eh?

The man running against Mulder is Phillip Walter. The tactic of supporting him sends a message that anyone who remotely supported or ignored the new runway needs to start looking for a new job. The politicians who sent letters, flyers, phone calls, and made house calls before the Nov. election must think our votes are important. It's time they realized that they need to cater to suburbanites and not just look out for the interests of Chicago. We can start with Frimark and Mulder then take it up to Shakowsky and eventually all the way to Durbin! These folks have had 69 days to make a public statement offering a PLAN to deal with the situation......NO WORD YET. ..sooooo we hit em where it hurts...the VOTE.

ParkRidgeUnderground said...

Anon@6:08 --

It's a tactic that isn't likely to be effective, as anyone outside of Arlington Hts. can't cast a vote in that Mayor's race. And, it will be pointed out that financial support coming from Park Ridge for Philip Walter is outsider interference in their local political business.

Also to be considered, Mulder can very legitimately claim to have looked out for the best interests of Arlington Hts. while she has served as chairman of the ONCC. Think the voters in Arlington Hts. may think that's fine and dandy?

Underground,

You are exactly right. I wish Frimark, Marous, Weitecha, etc had performed exactly like Mulder. We might have a little less noise now.

Our leadership chose to fight, rather than try to work with Daley to at least send the air traffic and noise over someone else's town.

MIKE said...

Well aren't we selfish!

Send it over someplace else.

Looks like we are going to get two more runways folks. Yes 400 more planes per day x 3 runways....

Yes, Daley's air force wants to envelope our skies with banners being towed behind these planes!!

saying...." Thank you Howie"..

we also can thank Howie for not having the ...alls to stand up.

Where was Don Bach ....the so called lead/point man in all this?

Oh I get it....he was waiting to be told what to do and both Howie and Don B. fell over each other
on the way to the candy store.

I have never seen such BS in all my life. Such indecision would kill and army's will to fight.

Its like inbreeding here.

Why stop at a Casino?

How about a Pay Day Cash Advance store on the Higgins corridor? And as far as Horse racing experience - look no further than our 6th ward alderman!
