A quickie!
At last night's City Council meeting Mayor Howard read a statement saying, "Journeys from PADS to HOPE will not be expanding their service area to include the city of Park Ridge." Mayor Howard then said that in light of this development he was withdrawing his recommendation to the City Council for consideration of his homeless shelter contract scheme to provide the Public Works Center as a PADS site.
Mayor Howard went on to remind those in attendance that the City Council still has "difficult decisions to make" and will be discussing the remaining text amendment and licensing ordinances at their next meeting on November 17, 2008.
The work isn't over, but a big hunk of what we feel was a disaster waiting to happen has been removed. We hope our City Council will address this issue in a way that places the concerns and interests of residents and taxpayers ahead of any other special interests.
The City Council then moved on to consideration of whether or not the city's liquor ordinances should be amended to allow for arcade games and other entertainment to be allowed in establishments that serve alcohol. That action was referred back to the Procedures and Regulations Committee for further discussion.
Finally, we hear PRUdos may be in order for a certain city employee's promotion! The PRU Crew wanted to light some sparklers to celebrate, but we understand that's illegal!
Short but sweet!

This is still no over by any means.
The city still needs to adopt an ordinance that meets the needs of the citizens and children of the area. By announcing PADS withdrawal that means nothing. THis isn't aout PADS specific - it's about ANY shelter that wants to open up and operate in town.
Please don't stop in your efforts to talk to the aldermen to pass sound public policy.
Sorry to say but as we know we can't trust the PRMA, SPC, Mary Seat or any other. And if the Lutheran Church (forgoto the name) is still getting up to code a homeless hselter can open there in time. And PADS CAN come back and other shelter operators can come too.
Please continue to keep the arguement to continue with the P&Z recommendations as written.
Just because PADS is gone (for now) doesn't mean it's over.
Well, blow me over. I'm going to go Sasquatch hunting now.
This may not be over. However, together, all of us, seam to have gotten our message across. We need to continue to speak, write, call on behalf of our concerns of any shelter in our city. But, the system did seam to work from a govermental standpoint.
My concern is that one of the PRMA's members will proceed with opening a shelter just to see what would happen and take it to court if necessary to let the judges decide. Take the citizens and our representatives out of the process!!!!
Hmmm, makes one wonder why PADS backed away. Apparently they realized they would probably have to be on the license..why were they so afraid of that?
I'm in for the fight on the ordinance..
Something fishy is going on! Do you think the Mayor, etc. were about to be uncovered?
Do you think you can call that mtg
a mtg of the minds??
Coming to terms ??
Working together for the common cause ?
We can only hope so.
Peace.
I think pads was peeing in its pants over the scrutiny of their financials, & actually having to answer to some responsibility by being coapplicant. We can't let the mayor push thru any crappy regulations, we have to keep on fighting for the safety of our children!
3:41 PM - You make a lot of sense. PADS doesn't want to start a precedent of having to follow rules, they would rather open a shelter under the radar in towns with loosey-goosey zoning ordinances, and apathetic residents. PADS didn't get "fed up" as the Mayor says - they got pissed-off.
Let's stay on top of this. The Mayor has 17 days to come up with another scam.
Anon@9:04 PM - Do you mean that I've been tricked into thinking that this issue is over?
The ammendments to the zoning ordinance are still on the table to be voted on/negotiated for future homeless shelters.
